I don’t know. Maybe I was expecting more from the Swann SWDVK-425504 S 4-Channel Digital Video Recorder with Smartphone Viewing and 4 x PRO-550 Cameras. While it works okay for being alerted that someone is out there, I can get the same thing from a motion sensor light for a lot less money. It would be nice to recognize who was wandering around in my yard at 3 in the morning. Unless they’re carrying a sign that says “I’m your neighbor Bob” or have a hunchback or something, the Swann won’t be much help in identifying who this person is.

Everything in my kit worked okay but I read some of the reviews and saw that camera reliability appears to be a bit of an issue. This worries me because I have my cameras mounted in places that are not that easy to get to. Still, everything works great for me and reading some of the other reviews makes me wonder if I’m sacrificing too much resolution with the slower record speeds. Maybe I could recognize an intruder if I went hi-res on it. Have to try and I’ll get back to you on that.
On the plus side, the price is pretty good and setup was just a tiny-brainer. The idea of being able to monitor things off your smart phone sounds like a killer app to me. First off, however, I have to go buy a smart phone and make sure that my router is UPNP compatible. Because I live way out of town and am in the city all day long, this sounds like a great way to keep an eye on my stuff while I’m not there. It should save a lot of money over hiring an alarm company.
Anyhow, I like the concept and I think it will be pretty handy once I figure everything out.
